Twenty-five students swapped the classroom for a two-day stint in a laboratory at RUB and participated in the 4th Summer School in Materials Science, organized by the Chair of Materials Technology and the Interdisciplinary Center for Advanced Materials Simulation (ICAMS). In their day-to-day work, RUB scientists focus on metallic materials, which, among other things, ensure that cars are safe, airplanes are lightweight, and catalysts are highly efficient.

These research topics were brought to life for the participants through experiments, some of which were conducted by the young people themselves. To this end, nine experimental stations have recently been made available, which participants can operate on their own after a brief introduction. The establishment of the “Research-Based Learning” experimental stations was funded by the Krupp Foundation and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Materialkunde (DGM).
