On June 26, 2025, Ruhr-Universität Bochum hosted an open day - Inside RUB. The aim was to get pupils interested in engineering degree courses such as mechanical engineering, civil and environmental engineering, sales engineering and product management or materials science.
On this day, the Institute of Materials offered exciting insights into the world of materials. In experiments such as light microscopy and mobile X-ray analysis, participants examined the microstructure and chemical composition of jewelry, 3D-printed knives and bicycle parts. Other highlights included turbine blades made from high-temperature materials and live demonstrations of the shape memory effect - an impressive example of smart materials.
